Oil Classifications & Extraction

Understanding the chemical properties of crude oil and the engineering methods used for its recovery is essential for optimizing refining output and distribution efficiency.

Crude Oil Classification

Crude oil is classified primarily by its density (API Gravity) and sulfur content. API gravity determines whether the oil is Light (above 31.1°), Medium (between 22.3° and 31.1°), or Heavy (below 22.3°). Sulfur content determines if the oil is Sweet (less than 0.5% sulfur) or Sour (higher sulfur). Sweet crude requires less processing and produces lower emissions during refining, making it highly demanded.

Light crude oil has low viscosity and flows freely at room temperature, while heavy crude has high density and viscosity, often requiring preheating or diluents (condensates) to be transported via pipelines. Medium crude offers a balanced composition representing the majority of global industrial petroleum supply.

Oil Extraction & Recovery Methods

Oil recovery spans three distinct phases: **Primary Recovery** utilizes natural reservoir pressure (gravity, water drive, or gas drive) to lift oil, recovering 5-15%. **Secondary Recovery** employs water flooding or gas injection to maintain pressure, recovering another 20-40% of the original oil in place.

**Tertiary Recovery** (or Enhanced Oil Recovery - EOR) uses advanced engineering methods (thermal steam injection, chemical polymer flooding, or gas miscible injection like CO2) to reduce oil viscosity and retrieve up to 60% of the reservoir's capacity. Offshore drilling requires specialized floating or fixed platforms, while onshore wells rely on pumpjacks and directional drilling.

Crude Oil Grades

Brent Crude

Brent Crude

The leading global price benchmark for Atlantic basin crude oils. Light and sweet, ideal for gasoline and middle distillates.

West Texas Intermediate

West Texas Intermediate (WTI)

High-quality, ultra-light sweet crude oil from US fields. Extremely low sulfur content makes it highly efficient for refining.

Dubai Crude

Dubai Crude (Fateh)

A medium sour crude oil representing the Middle Eastern export benchmark. Crucial feedstock for Asian refineries.

Arabian Heavy
